Depending on your machine model, a decorative stitch such as a crescent or bead stitch will require the Stitch Length dial to be set at a smaller number (between 0.5 and 1.5). Why doesn’t my stitch pattern match what is on my machine?ĭifferent stitch patterns require different stitch lengths in order to sew correctly.Lack of activity or movement will cause the lubricant to dry out and using the machine at that time can cause parts to break.

PRO TIP: If the machine has not been used for several years, we recommend a tune-up, just like you would do if you had not used your car for a long period of time. We also recommend that you have your machine tuned-up by a qualified Singer® technician every 3 to 4 years to keep it in good running order. If you only use your sewing machine once a month, lubricate once every three months. If you use your machine once a week, lubricate once a month.

If your manual does call for you to oil the machine, and you use your machine every day, we suggest that you lubricate once a week. You may also put a few drops on the handwheel where it meets the side of the machine. However, you can put 2 to 3 small drops of sewing machine oil in the bobbin case area and on the needle bar as this will not harm the machine. Good question! If your machine manual does not include instructions on oiling, your machine has been pre-lubricated at the factory and will not need additional lubricating. We recommend Singer® oil only in our machines. If you do use heavy thread, be sure to use a appropriately sized needle (size 16 or 18) and increase the stitch length. However, using this type of thread constantly will eventually damage your machine’s tension. You can occasionally use a heavy duty thread or buttonhole twist. If you are quilting, you can use cotton thread. Most all-purpose thread is 100% polyester. This thread can be purchased from your local sewing or fabric store. Household sewing machines are designed to be used with regular all-purpose sewing thread. The take-up lever has an opening at the back that allows the thread to slip into it from behind. Make sure the needle is at the highest position, slip the thread into the opening between the front cover at the top of the machine, pull the thread down behind the lever and then pull it towards you, the take-up lever will then thread itself. The take-up lever is not visible to the eye it is hidden behind the front panel of your machine. Usually, the accessory compartment slides off to reveal the free-arm.

The free arm is located at the bottom of the sewing machine protruding out from the main body and slightly in front of the needle and feed dogs. The free arm is often used when sewing pant legs, cuffs and sleeves.

Most portable sewing machines (a machine not attached to a table) have a free arm. This is a feature that is unique to the New Featherweight C240.

It is also often used in quilting when sewing two layers of fabric and one of batting. It feeds well with materials such as plaids, knit, vinyl or leather. With the IEF, fabric can be sewn without shifting or puckering since the fabric is gripped and fed by both upper and lower feed teeth. Integrated Even Feed or IEF “walks” over the fabric to assist with keeping fabric layers feeding at the same rate. Made using an interlock stitch, but with a rib-like appearance. The interlocking prevents the fabric from producing runs and it doesn’t curl at the edges. Interlock knits have the same pattern on both the front and back of the fabric. Rib Stitch knits have columns of ribs on both the front and back of the fabric and provide excellent elasticity. Jersey knit fabric has flat visible vertical lines on the front and horizontal ribs are dominant on the back. Always use a scrap piece to find the best settings, but you will most likely use a lower tension than normal. An even feed foot or a walking foot will provide the best results. Resist the urge to pull the fabric while sewing as this will stretch the material, but do try to support the weight. When sewing with knits always use a ball point needle and pins. More ribs per inch will mean a more rigid and stable material, fewer ribs will mean stretchier material. Knits consist of vertical rows of loops that are called ribs or wales.
